Atlantic City was incorporated in 1854. This same year train service began linking this city with the urban centers of New York City and Philadelphia. Atlantic City became a very popular beach destination because of its close proximity to Philadelphia. In 1870, store owners had the first boardwalk built to keep the beach from taking over their store lobbies. The boardwalk has been both expanded and reinforced using steel and concrete over the years.
